A councilman of Jacksonville is introduced legislation to decriminalize the possession of the small amount of cannabis. If the bill pass, then Jacksonville will add in the growing lists of states to eliminate criminal penalties for recreational use of the drug.
Councilman Garrett Dennis introduced this law that would not limit police officers on growing low-level marijuana. Besides, police will give them the discretion to issue a civil citation to people who would be caught 20 grams or less marijuana.
Moreover, the councilman said it is the right thing to do because they throw in jail and lose their jobs because they can’t get out of jail.
According to the councilman, the law would apply 18 years or older and not charged with any other crime at that time. First, it would replace a first-degree misdemeanor and punishable with a one-year jail or $1000 fine.
Officer Sheriff Mike Williams will decide whether to issue criminal violations or civil citations for marijuana possession. Moreover, Mayor Lenny Curry will sign the legislation.
Recreational marijuana drug will be available at least for nine medical conditions in which glaucoma, cancer, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Before that, the drug was restricted to oil, oil, or edible form, but Rick DeSantis signed the bill this year and allowed the patients to smoke it. However, recreational marijuana is illegal, still across Florida.
Jacksonville Civil Citation for Small Quantity Marijuana
A new state bill will allow the 21 ow over 21 years of age to legally possess, use, transport up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and grow up to six plants. However, still, in that case, it would be illegal to smoke or ingest marijuana in a public place with violators of $100.
This bill will also allow selling the drug and other related products. However, local governments could prohibit businesses. According to this, the newly files law will not allow the local businesses to make sales between 1 am to 6 am. If a person does not pay, then you could face $500 fine.
Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry released a statement on this bill, “Legalizing drugs and encouraging law enforcement seems contradictory to ensuring our city is safer.”
According to another news, Smokable Medical Marijuana is legal in Jacksonville and some other states of Florida. However, it is still controversial, and some states in Florida are using Marijuana as recreational drugs.
